Born in Munich, Germany to a Ghanaian father and German mother, Kojo spent his formative years on the streets of Maseru, Lesotho, eventually completing his International Baccalaureate at Machabeng High School in 1990. Der Jazz-Trompeter und Schlagersänger Billy Mo ist nach langer Krankheit im Alter von 81 Jahren gestorben. Berühmt wurde der aus Trinidad stammende Entertainer in den sechziger Jahren mit Hits wie “Ich kauf mir lieber einen Tirolerhut”.

Musiker Mo (1997): Berühmt mit dem Tirolerhut

Hannover – Ausgerechnet ein Trachten-Utensil brachte den Jazz-Trompeter Billy Mo an die Spitze der Hitparaden. “Ich kauf’ mir lieber einen Tirolerhut”, sang der dunkelhäutige Mann aus Trinidad 1962 und erfreute damit die deutschen Schlagerfans. In den sechziger Jahren war Mo neben Stars wie Conny Francis und Gus Backus ein gern und oft gesehener Gast in den Musiksendungen des Fernsehens. Am Freitagmorgen starb der Musiker nach langer Krankheit an Herzversagen in einem Krankenhaus in Hannover. Er war seit zweieinhalb Jahren ein Pflegefall.

Billy Mo, mit bürgerlichem Namen Peter Mico Joachim, wurde am 22. Februar 1923 in Trinidad geboren. Er erhielt ein Stipendium an der Londoner Musikhochschule, wo er als Sänger und Trompeter ausgebildet wurde und unter anderem mit Stars wie Winifred Atwell und der Ivor Curzon Band auftrat. 1956 kam Mo nach Hamburg. In der Folgezeit entstanden hochwertige Swing-Einspielungen.

Erfolgreich war Mo allerdings eher mit der Schlager-Musik: Neben dem “Tirolerhut” gelangen ihm zahlreiche Hitparaden-Erfolge, darunter “Wenn die Elisabeth” (1960), “Bierdeckel-Polka” (1963), “Das Humbta-Täterä” (1964) und “Der Salontiroler” (1964). FULL STORY HERE…

The African-German community has a long history, but the sizeable minority is often overlooked in a country where being German is often considered to mean being white. Now a group of black German filmmakers is trying to change that.

A teenage girl finds her life turned upside down when her father, who she has never met, turns up. After some initial distrust, she begins to develop an affection for him. Even though she still blames him for abandoning her mother, she begins to understand that life is about making difficult choices — until she finds out her father has established a new one with another woman.

Winta Yohannes’ “Cherish” is a universal coming-of-age story.

The plot of the short film “Cherish” is one which many people could relate to. Winta Yohannes, the film’s 32-year-old German director, wanted just that. “It’s a universal story which very many Germans can identify with,” she says.

But the film is more than just that. Yohannes, who was born in Eritrea and moved to Germany at the age of three, is showing her film at this year’s Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale) as part of the series “New Perspectives.” Her film is informed by her experiences growing up in Germany — a country where the black minority is next to invisible.

That’s something the organizers, the association Black Artists in German Film (SFD), is trying to change. “We want to make people aware of the fact that black filmmakers are making films which avoid the old clichés and represent black life as we see it,” says SFD’s Philippa Ebéné. READ MORE!
