African-German Filmmakers Hope to Open Up ‘New Perspectives’

By David Gordon Smith in Berlin

The African-German community has a long history, but the sizeable minority is often overlooked in a country where being German is often considered to mean being white. Now a group of black German filmmakers is trying to change that.

A teenage girl finds her life turned upside down when her father, who she has never met, turns up. After some initial distrust, she begins to develop an affection for him. Even though she still blames him for abandoning her mother, she begins to understand that life is about making difficult choices — until she finds out her father has established a new one with another woman.

berlinale.de

Winta Yohannes’ “Cherish” is a universal coming-of-age story.

The plot of the short film “Cherish” is one which many people could relate to. Winta Yohannes, the film’s 32-year-old German director, wanted just that. “It’s a universal story which very many Germans can identify with,” she says.

But the film is more than just that. Yohannes, who was born in Eritrea and moved to Germany at the age of three, is showing her film at this year’s Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale) as part of the series “New Perspectives.” Her film is informed by her experiences growing up in Germany — a country where the black minority is next to invisible.

That’s something the organizers, the association Black Artists in German Film (SFD), is trying to change. “We want to make people aware of the fact that black filmmakers are making films which avoid the old clichés and represent black life as we see it,” says SFD’s Philippa Ebéné. READ MORE!

An uplifting fly-on-the-wall documentary that portrays the monumental time of change during the Obama campaign that led up to his presidency in 2008.

This film interweaves complex cultural questions with the director’s biographical legacy and becomes a source of renewed inspiration reconciling the personal and universal dream for a better world.

We follow filmmaker Satti, born to a German mother and Sudanese father and raised behind the Iron Curtain in East Germany, as he embarks on a quest following the Obama campaign to find hope again.

On this epic journey, Satti encounters varied and charismatic people that give us deep insights into the political expectations that led to the Barack Obama Presidency.

Satti’s initial skepticism is often overwhelmed by the enthusiasm and spirit of the American people; nevertheless he dares to ask: “Can we really resurrect our lost hopes and dreams?”.

Mo Asumang Portrait on MNET by Moderator Fareed Khimani Mo is an acclaimed filmmaker, actress, and moderator well known in Germany due to her brave documentary movies and TV moderation. Recently she has gained International exposure being featured in Roman Polanski’s movie “The Ghostwriter” playing Condoleezza Rice, featured in an article by USA Today which linked President Obama and Mo Asumang, being compared to Michael Moore, and through her work leading workshops and lectures about racism and social integration in Universities and Schools across USA and Europe. Since the beginning of her career as actress and TV moderator in Germany in 1996, she has became a well known cultural figure and has taken on a successful career as both moderator, producer, writer, actress, and film director. In recent years Mo has dedicated her multi talents and her energy to creative activism in the field of racism. In her new documentary “Road to Rainbow”, directed and produced by Mo Asumang, Mo is searching for the dream the south Africans had about equality that was to rise after the Apartheid Era, and the social reality of South Africa 16 years later. In her last movie “Roots Germania” Mo was able to solve a trauma caused by racism; She undertakes a journey to discover her roots and identity, facing her African father in Ghana, her White German Mother in German, and Jürgen Rieger, the head of the neonaziparty NPD. The catalyst of this journey, a threat over her life received by the NeoNazi Band “White Aryan Rebels”, becomes a poignant tool for self discovery and a sharp reflection to matters of racism in Germans society of today. Mo’s seeking for social justice is not by chance. At the age of 5 weeks Mo was sent to an orphanage, and then raised by foster parents and her white grandmother. Mo Asumang has been selected as one of the leading figures and activists in Germany for social integration and Intercultural affairs. www.mo-asumang-management.com
